Unique boat design of Bodrum/Turkey
Posted in boat, Boat and Sea Life, Design and Art with tags boat design, boat tour turkey, bodrum gulets, gulet, sea culture, turkey on May 25, 2009 by atalaytugelAs some of u know Turkey is the third biggest boat builder country in the world. If u wonder who is first and second that would be USA and Italy. Of course the reason Turkey being in the third place is not that we can’t build quality boats; it is because the government asks for huge taxes which can go up to 33% of the boats price. In the past couple of years 18 boat building factories shut down in Turkey because of that. But in the south of Turkey, traditional design is still in the game. Most of us probably seen those huge wooden boats but not really cared about it. I am talking about the “Gulets”
They were used by the fishermans in the past but the days went by this huge powerfull boats started to be popular as personal yatchs.
A traditional sailing boat would carry a rather smaller engine, because the weight is important if u are sailing. But this can lead to stability problems. I am not saying that it is dangerous, but u have probably seen sail boats which are nearly in the water.
But Gulets can carry up to thousands of hp engine without problem. With their huge, wooden skeletons, balance is not a problem at all. But of course to sail this huge monsters need more than 2-3 sails.
Nowadays u can see a lot of verions of the tradition “Gulet”. B oat builders are showing respect to the old design and trying to build newer versions of this wonderfull boat. Here are some pictures of “Gulets”.

The common point they all have since this week is that they all have little icons; not only writings as we have in Turkey. So if u can2t speak Turkish or doesn’t know what “cevreyolu” means u can’t possible find the highway. There we go Holland and Switzerland.
